A Challenge to Return God's Gifts was presented on Tuesday afternoon, December 27, 2005, to Pastor Steve Hay, Dick Carmichael, Danny Pemberton and George Kimmell by a husband and wife team who wish to remain anonymous. We will maintain their anonymity until the conclusion of the challenge period, except to say that the husband was baptized in Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The challenge presented to the church is that every dollar received by the church as a contribution, donation or gift dedicated to the building project between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2008 will be matched - dollar for dollar - up to $1,000,000 (one million dollars). The money received from the givers of the challenge will be a gift to the church. The intended purpose this generous gift is to help free the church from the burden of the mortgage for the new building as quickly as possible. This will enable the church to support and grow existing and new ministries as soon as possible. The conditions of this Challenge to Return God's Gifts are: Starting January 1, 2006, all contributions, donations and gifts for the building fund received by the church will qualify for the challenge match. This includes contributions against pledges made to our initial capital campaign, donations to the building fund, gifts-in-kind from tradesmen working on the building, gifts from local businesses and community leaders, and Ashland District and/or Virginia Conference grants. Contributions, donations and gifts dedicated to the building that are received by the church after December 31, 2008 will not qualify for the challenge match. The matching dollars will be available to the church on a quarterly basis. For example, money from the challenge gift matching the dollar amount received by the church between January 1 and March 31, 2006 will be available in April 2006. Should the church receive contributions, donations or gifts totaling $1,000,000 before the end of December 2008, the challenge period will end earlier than the end of December 2008. Although the primary intent of the challenge gift is to reduce the mortgage, the matching funds can be applied to equipping and furnishing the new facilities we are building. The church Finance Committee will be responsible for managing the matching funds. The Pastor and the Chair of the Finance Committee will be responsible for communicating with the giving husband and wife team, and strengthening the relationship between the church and the generous husband and wife. The donors agreed to add a codicil to their Wills to reinforce their intentions to fulfill this agreement if they die before the end of the challenge period. We must meet this challenge responsibly. Financial support to the operating budget of the church is our first priority. Bills must be paid and buildings maintained. Contributions, gifts and donations to the building program are "second" giving - over and above the funds to meet the operating budget. We must exercise caution against being so eager to participate in this remarkable challenge that we jeopardize our basic family needs. Please address your questions about the Challenge to Return God's Gifts in writing to the Finance Committee. You can put them in the Finance Committee mail box in the Fellowship Hall, or e-mail to: finance@tabumc.org

Our goal is to have at least $600,000 in pledged commitments and non-binding
estimates of support of the building project. We want
to show potential lenders strong evidence of the financial support our
church members, and friends of the church, are willing to put toward the
building project in the next three years. We believe that potential lenders
will want our business, and will offer us affordable rates and terms when
they know the project has solid support As of Sunday, July 31, 2004 we
have a total of 112 campaign commitments and non-binding estimates of support
that total $427,412.
If you have questions about making a commitment to the building project, or
for submitting a non-binding estimate of support, please call George Kimmell
(786-4576). Please act today.
