Pastor Jim O'Quinn
The Reverend Dr. James G. O’Quinn, (Jim) grew up in Alabama as a preacher’s kid. Jim transferred to Virginia from the North Alabama Conference after marrying his wife Dorothy McNeer in 1982. The Reverend Dr. Dorothy McNeer O’Quinn is the Senior Pastor of Duncan Memorial UMC located in Ashland, Virginia. Jim and Dorothy have three grown sons. Their oldest son, Blair is a Pastor in a cooperative parish near Martinsville, Virginia. Their other two sons, Payne and Vaughn have autism and live in a community-based residential placement in Richmond. Jim’s mother, Thelma is a retired Federal Employee and the widow of a United Methodist Minister.
Jim O’Quinn was appointed to serve his first congregation as a ministerial student while at Birmingham-Southern College. He graduated Seminary at Emory University and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary. Jim O’Quinn is an ordained Elder and Member in Full Connection of the Virginia Conference.
Pastor Jim has a wealth of congregational experience as he served churches in rural, suburban, small-town, and inner-city settings. In 1996, Jim was appointed as an Extension Minister to work with perpetrators of abuse. He was endorsed as a Pastoral Counselor through the United Methodist Endorsing Agency. In 2011-2012, Jim was contracted to be the lead sex offender therapist for the State of Delaware Department of Corrections. In 2013, at the conclusion of the Delaware contract, Jim O’Quinn returned to parish ministry to serve the three loving congregations of White Oak, Corinth, and Trinity Churches. In 2014, Jim became the Director of Congregational Excellence for the James River District. In June 2018, Pastor Jim became the senior pastor for Tabernacle UMC.
